I've always had a strong passion for speaking up against body shaming.
I don't know really where it comes from but it's always really been there - for both men and women. Though this post is particular to women.
People tend to think that those that speak up for body positivity and body love is because they've been at the receiving end of a hurtful body-related comment at some point in their lives.
I can say, it doesn't always have to come from there.
I'm grateful I haven't experienced that first-hand but I have, however, had the pressure of keeping a certain body appearance and have also seen loved ones hurt by words referring to their body. And I'm not one to stand for that!
Your body is YOUR BODY! Not anybody else's.
Only YOU know your milestones and struggles.
Only YOU can celebrate and honour it.
Only YOU will live in it.
We all start off curious and complete in our bodies but somewhere between then and now, doubt and fear set in.
Is it the media or those around us? Maybe both??
You're experienced in life enough now to work with your mind and retrain it to believe the wonders YOUR body does for you every-single-day!
Whatever or whomever said hurtful words to you will no longer have weight because you, my dear, are more powerful than you give yourself credit for!
Who cares if your curves have a certain angle to them or not? C'mon!
You look hot! Believe it!!
To quote Elizabeth Gilbert in Eat, Pray, Love (one of my fave movies, by the way):
“I am so tired of saying no, waking up in the morning and recalling every single thing I ate the day before, counting every calorie I consumed so I know just how much self loathing to take into the shower. I'm going for it. I have no interest in being obese, I'm just through with the guilt. So this is what I'm going to do, I'm going to finish this pizza, and then we are going to go watch the soccer game, and tomorrow we are going to go on a little date and buy ourselves some bigger jeans.”
It's all in our heads!
Comparison sets in.
Self-doubt governs our day.
Stop it! You're so much more than the size of pants you wear.
Can you imagine the amount of cells in your body and electric connections that have already been at work since the moment you woke up to this very moment reading this post?
It's insane how much work your body does to help you do the things you need to do. And usually without a 'thanks' from you.
I believe it's not about the curves or lack of but rather about it being healthy.
There are women who are much healthier than a skinny girl on a magazine but they may not look it because we've been SO brainwashed that a certain look is the look that's acceptable.
If that 'skinny' girl's metabolism is what's keeping her thin and she's eating, hydrating, and moving her body in a way that allows her to live healthy, what business do we have to judge her?
I stand up for MY body! And I hope you do too!!
Be grateful you're breathing here, right now. You're moving and you have the ability of training your mind to accept the wonder that your body is.
